“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”2 Tim 4:2-3
Vanuatu is a Pacific Island nation with 318,000 people, 82% of whom are Christian. It is the world’s most linguistically dense country with approximately 110 languages. One language, Bislama, unites the nation and is spoken by over 90% of people, making it Vanuatu’s most prominent and fastest-growing first language. However, despite the prevalence of Bislama, there are only around two dozen Christian resources written in it, and no new resources have been created and widely distributed in the past ten years.
Vanuatu has more registered mobile phone numbers than people, and over half the adult population uses social media, which has fast become the marketplace of ideas and religious discussion. Additionally, file sharing is rife, allowing information to pass quickly from device to device. Most content is prosperity teaching or faith-healing, and there is also an influence from Islam and false forms of Christianity.
There is an enormous opportunity to create much-needed resources and capitalise on the explosion in the use of social media to fill it with Christian content. Tom and Margaret established Trutok Media in 2018 to disseminate expository preaching, whole-Bible resources (biblical theology), and resources for theology and Christian living (systematic and pastoral theology). The aim of Trutok is not just to give people material, but to teach them to read the Bible for themselves.
Trutok’s tagline translates as ‘God’s word in Vanuatu’s languages,’ and everything is in Bislama or another of Vanuatu’s languages. In fact, we believe that we are the first fully-Bislama website.
Resources include sermon mp3s, music mp3s, Bible teaching videos, theological explainer videos, music videos, text resources, language Bible apps, hymn books, and much more. Everything is free to be shared from device to device, and written resources can be printed.
Tom has appointed two of his former students to work voluntarily with Trutok Media, focused especially on building our social media presence. Tom will work with them from Australia to create audio and video resources.
